Each day I am continually discouraged by the news. Bernard Madoff stole billions of dollars, the US economy continues to slide with no end in sight, the world wide environment continues to be abused at an unsustainable rate and war still ravages millions of people. The connection to education seems all too obvious. These problems can only be solved if we begin adopting a completely new set of values and purpose for schools. I believe that “Empathy” may be the most important 21st century skill and should be fostered in every student on this planet. The current design of most schools socializes students to become indifferent players in an unsustainable and unfulfillable economic game. This socialization reflects the current values of a society and it’s becoming far too obvious the sheer destruction these values have on the planet. The connection to education and the socialization power of schools seems far too obvious. It’s now time to rethink the purpose of schooling and begin equipping a generation of students with skills that will help us build a more noble, sustainable and brighter future than the one we are currently facing. Imagine what the world would be like if every school valued empathy more than indifference. That’s a future that excites me.

Good to see you back in the blogging saddle!
Raising children to think outside of themselves to how they affect their world is big on my parenting list. It starts in the home but definitely needs to be a major theme of what our schools do.

“Empathy” is indeed a pretty important skill to have. However, I wouldn’t say it is the most important skill in 21t century. I think being able to know what one could do on her or his own is the most important skill to have today. A lot of people have the environment or the talent but don’t either that it exists or how to use it wisely. The majority start to only focus on quantity not quality. One reason why 2D cartoon no longer exists; because a lot of the talented artists don’t realize how much talent they actually got so they would give up onto the computer world, where things could be done in a shorter amount of time with not a lot of passion.

Impressive, I never thought of this. School is no doubt teaching the kids to be indifferent to this world. Too much capitalist in our educational system these days, we learn nothing but how to benefit ourselves. I think we need more talent developing classes. Too many people out there have talents that never really got developed. I’ve seen plumbers with impressive drawing skill and taxi driver that can hit impressive high notes, but the society doesn’t allow them to develop their talent. So I really wish to see more talent developing educational system in the future.
btw, say hi to my other global ethics teacher for me :]
